Chapter 10 - The Vote

The full board convened two days later in Blackwell’s glass headquarters.

Nora entered slowly, still sore, with Celeste on one side and Gabriel on the other. Hundreds of employees watched through internal video. Outside, reporters crowded the plaza.

Ethan attended under court order by remote link. Naomi sat beside her attorney in a separate room.

Margaret Sloan opened the meeting with the independent audit’s preliminary findings: twenty-three million dollars in suspicious vendor payments, falsified material certificates, altered safety reports, and repeated removal of Nora’s authorship from company records.

Then came the ownership vote.

Ethan’s attorney argued that Northstar’s debt conversion was invalid because Nora had concealed the investment during marriage. Celeste produced signed disclosures Ethan had ignored and emails in which he called the documents “your little paperwork hobby.”

A director covered his mouth to hide a laugh.

Nora presented a restructuring plan. Unsafe projects would pause. Executive bonuses would be frozen. No field worker would be laid off during the audit. Senior leadership compensation would fund payroll reserves. An employee safety council would receive veto authority over material substitutions.

One director objected. “That gives labor extraordinary power.”

“It gives the people standing beneath the cranes the right to say the crane is unsafe,” Nora replied.

The vote began.

Six directors supported Nora. Two abstained. One remained loyal to Ethan.

The chairman cast the final vote.

“Nora Whitmore Blackwell is confirmed as interim chief executive and controlling chair.”

Applause erupted somewhere below the boardroom, then spread floor by floor through the building. It was not elegant. It sounded like relief.

Ethan’s face filled the wall screen.

“You stole my father’s company.”

Nora opened Samuel’s notebook.

“Your father stole mine.”

The district attorney entered with two investigators. Arthur Blackwell’s old records had linked the Westhaven fraud to current shell vendors. Ethan was informed that he was under investigation for conspiracy, evidence tampering, fraud, and assault.

Naomi lowered her head.

Ethan did not.

As officers approached his location, his screen suddenly went black.

The attorney beside him shouted off camera. A door slammed. Someone had cut the connection.

Minutes later, police reported that Ethan had left the legal office through a service exit.

On Nora’s phone, a message appeared from an unknown number.
