Chapter 15 - The Counterattack
Ethan surrendered to police three days later, accompanied by cameras and an attorney.
He presented himself as a devoted husband persecuted by an ambitious wife and military brother. His legal team released edited recordings of Nora raising her voice during project meetings. Anonymous documents accused Northstar of market manipulation. A former psychiatrist, paid through a Blackwell foundation, claimed Nora displayed symptoms of trauma-related paranoia.
The strategy was obvious: if he could not erase evidence, he would make the truth appear like illness.
The attacks worked on enough people to matter.
Blackwell’s stock fell. A bank froze a credit line. Two clients threatened cancellation. Online strangers analyzed Nora’s face, marriage, grief, clothing, and tone. Some insisted a truly abused woman would appear more frightened. Others said a truly competent CEO would not have stayed so long.
Nora nearly withdrew from public view.
Then letters arrived from women inside the company.
An estimator wrote that Ethan had called her emotional when she challenged a budget. A site supervisor said managers labeled safety complaints hysterical. A receptionist described being instructed to route all of Nora’s calls through Ethan’s office. The pattern extended beyond one marriage.
Nora held a companywide forum.
“I stayed because I believed I could protect everyone by fixing the damage quietly,” she said. “That belief became part of the damage.”
She announced outside review of harassment complaints and waived nondisclosure agreements related to workplace misconduct. Executives warned of lawsuits. Nora signed the order anyway.
Ethan’s counterattack then became physical.
At 1:10 a.m., a fire started in the basement archive of Blackwell headquarters. Sprinklers contained most of it, but the target was clear: old project records, including Westhaven procurement files recently transferred for review.
Security footage showed a maintenance contractor entering with credentials issued under Naomi’s office. Naomi denied authorizing him and provided proof her access had been copied.
Maya discovered something stranger. The contractor had carried a site map marked with red circles around archive rooms and structural columns.
“He was not only burning documents,” she said. “He was checking the building’s load paths.”
Police identified the contractor as the same supervisor who entered Fort Redmond in the covered truck.
He had vanished.

On his abandoned laptop was a countdown file linked to remote sensors at Blackwell’s largest active project: the nearly completed Harbor Crown Tower, where eighty night-shift workers were scheduled to pour concrete the following evening.
The file was set to activate at midnight.
