Where the Weight Falls

Chapter 17 - Where the Weight Falls
At 11:58, the first brace released.
Steel groaned through the unfinished tower. Concrete pumps shut down below. Nora felt vibration travel through the service platform and into her bones.
“North cable, six turns,” she told Gabriel.
He worked the manual wrench while she watched laser measurements on a handheld monitor. Wind pushed against them forty stories above the river. Every breath pulled at Nora’s ribs.
The second brace unlocked.
The deck shifted three centimeters.
Over the radio, Maya reported that police had traced Ethan to the upper mechanical floor. Officers were moving in, but he had barricaded the access door.
Nora adjusted the sequence. “South cable, two turns back. Slowly.”
Gabriel obeyed without question.
That trust steadied her. Ethan had spent years treating her knowledge as useful only when hidden. Here, under real load, no one needed her to appear smaller.
The third brace began releasing ahead of schedule.
A support beam lurched. Gabriel lost his footing and swung against his line. Nora caught the tool bag before it fell, then anchored herself and hauled him back toward the platform.
“You okay?” she shouted.
“I have had better family evenings.”
She laughed once, breathlessly.
They reached the override box with thirty seconds remaining. The system required a six-digit engineering code. Ethan had changed it.
Nora looked across the structural grid. Arthur Blackwell used dates as project passwords. Ethan used victories.
Westhaven opened on August seventeenth—the number on Gabriel’s key.
Nora entered 081712.
ACCESS DENIED.
Ten seconds.
She remembered Ethan’s habit of making every achievement his own. He had always claimed he saved Blackwell on the day Northstar refinanced its first loan.
Nora entered that date.
The braces stopped.
Across the radio came cheering, then a warning. Police had breached the mechanical floor. Ethan ran onto an exterior maintenance deck and slipped during the chase. His safety line caught, leaving him hanging above the river.
Gabriel looked toward the upper level.
“Let them get him.”
But Nora saw the line scraping against a sharp steel edge. It would not hold.
She climbed.
Ethan stared up as she reached the anchor point. Terror stripped away charm, anger, and control.
“Help me,” he gasped.
Nora secured a second line and lowered it.
Even after everything, she would not let another person die beneath a Blackwell structure.
When officers pulled him onto the deck, Ethan whispered, “Why?”

Nora looked at him.
“Because your choices do not get to design me.”
