Midnight at Harbor Crown

Chapter 16 - Midnight at Harbor Crown

Harbor Crown Tower rose sixty-eight stories above the river, its unfinished frame wrapped in winter fog.

Nora arrived at 10:40 p.m. with police, engineers, and emergency crews. Gabriel came despite orders to remain separate from the civilian investigation. He wore no uniform this time—only a dark jacket and the expression Nora remembered from distant disaster zones.

The tower’s sensors had been altered to report false stability readings. Four temporary braces on the forty-second floor were scheduled for remote release during the concrete pour. The resulting shift might not collapse the entire building, but it could send equipment and workers through multiple floors.

Luis began evacuation.

Maya traced the remote signal to a control room on level forty. Police found the missing contractor there, unconscious beside cut cables. Someone else had taken over the system.

Then Ethan called Nora.

His face appeared on her phone from somewhere inside the tower.

“You wanted to prove you could save everyone,” he said. “Here is your chance.”

“Where are you?”

“Close enough to watch.”

He demanded access to Northstar’s offshore reserve account and a public statement clearing him. If Nora complied, he would provide the release code.

Gabriel signaled technicians to trace the call.

Nora kept Ethan speaking.

“You killed my father.”

“My father made the decision.”

“You helped.”

“I was protecting the company.”

The phrase crossed twelve years and returned unchanged.

Nora looked at the workers descending stairwells, some carrying tools, others helping older colleagues. The company Ethan claimed to protect was not a logo or family name. It was these people.

She refused his demand.

At 11:53, engineers found a manual override beneath the forty-second-floor deck. Someone had to reach it across an exposed service platform while the automated braces began unlocking.

Nora clipped into a safety line.

Gabriel blocked her path. “No.”

“I designed the temporary system.”

“You have cracked ribs.”

“I know the sequence.”

Luis stepped forward. “Then tell me.”

Nora studied the brace layout and shook her head. The override required recalculation as loads shifted. A wrong turn could accelerate failure.

She met Gabriel’s eyes.

“I am not doing this because I need to prove I’m strong.”

“Then why?”

“Because I know how.”

He exhaled once, then attached a second line to his harness.

“You calculate,” he said. “I carry the tools.”

Together they stepped onto the platform as midnight approached.
