The Smell Before the Door

Chapter 01 - The Smell Before the Door

Damian Blackwood smelled the burnt milk before he opened the kitchen door.

The odor was sweet at first, then bitter enough to sting the back of his throat. It carried him instantly to childhood mornings when his mother left a copper pot boiling while she argued with servants about the exact angle of silverware.

But this was not childhood.

This was his home, and someone inside was crying.

Damian pushed through the swinging door.

His wife, Claire, sat on the tiled floor with their seven-year-old son clutched against her chest. Oliver’s blue pajama shirt was dotted with blood from his nose. One side of Claire’s cream dress had torn at the knee, and her hands shook as she pressed a towel beneath the boy’s face.

Behind the marble island stood Damian’s mother.

Eleanor Blackwood wore a white silk blouse and burgundy skirt, as perfectly arranged as if she were waiting for photographers. Beside her, a saucepan smoked on the stove. A ceramic cup lay shattered near Oliver’s bare feet.

Hannah Reed, the young live-in nanny, stood frozen by the sink.

Damian loosened his tie.

“What happened?”

Claire looked up.

“She forced him to drink it.”

Eleanor’s voice cut across hers.

“Your wife caused another episode. The child refused his medication, and she became hysterical.”

Oliver buried his face against Claire.

“No more milk.”

Damian moved toward the stove. Beneath the burnt skin floating across the saucepan, he saw pale blue powder clinging to the rim.

Claire had been telling him for months that Oliver became sick only after drinking the special milk Eleanor prepared at bedtime.

Damian had listened.

Then he had accepted Dr. Simon Kessler’s explanation that Claire was frightened and searching for patterns that were not there.

“What was in the cup?” he asked.

Eleanor stepped around the island.

“The medicine prescribed by his neurologist.”

“He takes tablets.”

“He cannot keep them down.”

Claire tightened her arms around Oliver.

“He doesn’t have a seizure disorder. She held his nose and poured it into his mouth. When I stopped her, she shoved me. Oliver hit the cabinet.”

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“Claire has been withholding treatment. She is dangerous to him.”

Damian saw a red mark around Oliver’s wrist.

Something inside him broke.

He crossed the kitchen and slapped his mother.

The sound echoed against the wooden cabinets.

Eleanor staggered, one hand rising to her cheek. Hannah gasped. Claire stared at Damian with horror—not relief.

Before anyone spoke, two uniformed police officers appeared in the doorway.

Eleanor looked at them, then at her son.

“I called before you arrived,” she said calmly. “I knew he would become violent when he saw what his wife had done.”

Damian turned toward the officers.

Eleanor had prepared the story before he ever smelled the milk.
