Chapter 17 - Claire’s Decision
Two years after the trial, Claire asked Damian to meet at the river park.
Oliver was at school. No attorneys or therapists attended.
Damian knew the conversation before she began.
“I don’t want to return to the marriage we had,” Claire said.
He looked toward the water.
“Neither do I.”
“I’m not sure I want to build another one.”
The honesty hurt without cruelty.
Damian asked whether she wanted divorce.
“Yes.”
He nodded.
No bargain.
No request to wait until Oliver was older.
No claim that the public scandal had already taken enough.
They agreed on a parenting plan centered on Oliver’s routines. Claire kept the small house. Damian rented an apartment nearby.
He transferred assets without confidentiality clauses.
Their divorce filing publicly acknowledged that Claire’s medical concerns had been valid and that Damian failed to investigate them.
Lawyers said the statement was unnecessary.
Claire said necessity was not the only measure.
Oliver reacted with fear.
“Is Dad leaving because I told?”
Both parents answered together.
“No.”
Damian explained that adults can remain parents without remaining married.
Oliver asked whether he would have two kitchens.
“Yes.”
“Does Dad’s kitchen have milk?”
Damian smiled carefully.
“Only what you choose.”
The first overnight visit happened months later.
Oliver inspected every cabinet.
Damian showed him the medicine lockbox and gave Claire the access code.
He had learned transparency was not an insult.
It was support.
At bedtime, Oliver asked whether Damian still loved Claire.
“Yes.”
“Then why divorce?”
“Love does not always make a relationship safe or right.”
Oliver considered this.
“Did Grandmother love us?”
Damian felt the old temptation to give a simple answer.
“She may have felt something she called love. But love that requires control is not enough.”
Oliver nodded.
“Breakfast tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
In the morning, Damian made pancakes.
One was raw in the middle.
Oliver sent a photograph to Claire with the caption DAD STILL NEEDS SUPERVISION.
Claire laughed when she received it.
Their family had changed shape.
