The custody hearing began with Eleanor’s attorneys presenting Damian as violent and Claire as medically obsessive.
They showed emails in which Claire questioned doctors, requested repeated blood tests, and accused Eleanor of manipulating Oliver’s symptoms.
Without the kitchen footage, the messages looked unstable.
With it, they looked accurate.
Judge Margaret Sloan watched Eleanor restrain Oliver on the pantry recording.
She immediately barred Eleanor from contact with the child.
The courtroom exhaled.
Then Kessler’s attorney challenged the video’s authenticity and the chain of custody for Hannah’s powder samples.
The judge did not return Oliver to his parents.
Damian’s assault remained under investigation, and Claire’s role in stopping medication required review.
Oliver was placed with an independent therapeutic foster family for seven days.
It was safer than Eleanor.
It was still separation.
After the hearing, family attorney Miriam Cross examined the Blackwood trust documents. Claire had asked a question that no one else considered.
Why would Eleanor risk poisoning the child now?
The answer appeared in a succession clause written by Damian’s late father.
Blackwood Foods voting control belonged to Damian while he served as chief executive. Upon retirement or incapacity, control would pass to his oldest medically competent child.
If the child was declared permanently impaired before age ten, the family health trustee assumed control until the child turned twenty-one.
The trustee was Eleanor.
The merger vote was scheduled in nine days.
If Kessler certified Oliver’s neurological condition as permanent and Damian was removed after the assault, Eleanor could approve the merger alone.
The buyer, Helix Global, was controlled through a private investment fund.
Miriam traced the fund.
Eleanor owned a hidden interest.
She planned to sell the company to herself, erase the old research liabilities, and keep control under another name.
Damian had spent two years negotiating his own removal.
He called an emergency board meeting.
Eleanor arrived first.
She expressed sorrow over the family crisis and asked directors to suspend Damian until criminal allegations were resolved.
The board voted seven to five in her favor.
Damian lost access to company systems, security, and archives.
His office badge stopped working before he left the conference room.
Eleanor approached him near the elevator.
“You always mistook inheritance for competence.”
Damian looked at the woman who once tied his school shoes and later drugged his son.
“Did you plan Lily too?”
For the first time, Eleanor’s face moved.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Damian remembered Claire’s infant daughter collapsing after a bottle prepared at Eleanor’s house.
Lily’s death had been ruled genetic.
