Hannah’s Hidden Jar

Chapter 04 - Hannah’s Hidden Jar
Hannah Reed disappeared from the Blackwood house before dawn.
Eleanor’s attorney told police the nanny had resigned after becoming frightened by Damian’s behavior.
Her phone went straight to voicemail.
Damian assumed his mother had paid her to leave.
Claire disagreed.
“She saved the cup.”
A message arrived on Claire’s old nursing email at 5:12 a.m.
COME ALONE. ST. AGNES LAUNDROMAT. BRING NO BLACKWOOD SECURITY.
Claire showed it to Detective Naomi Cross, the officer newly assigned after the hospital lab flagged possible poisoning. Naomi arranged surveillance but allowed Claire to enter first.
Hannah waited in the rear laundry room beside humming industrial dryers.
She looked twenty-two instead of thirty, with no makeup and a backpack clutched against her chest.
“I’m sorry I didn’t stop her sooner.”
Claire approached slowly.
“What did you see?”
Hannah opened the backpack.
Inside was a glass baby-food jar containing gray powder, a memory card, and a small notebook.
For four months, Hannah had watched Eleanor crush blue tablets into Oliver’s milk. At first she believed they were prescribed. Then she noticed Kessler delivered them without pharmacy labels.
The milk always scorched because Eleanor heated it longer after adding the powder. The chemical changed its smell.
Hannah saved residue from three nights.
She also installed a small camera inside the pantry clock after Oliver told her Grandmother held his nose when he refused the cup.
“Why didn’t you call police?” Claire asked.
Hannah’s eyes filled.
“My younger brother is in a group home managed by the Blackwood Foundation. Mrs. Blackwood said he would be transferred to a locked facility if I interfered.”
The memory card contained two weeks of kitchen footage.
Eleanor preparing the milk.
Kessler placing envelopes in the pantry drawer.
Oliver crying.
Hannah attempting to replace the cup with plain milk.
And, on the night Damian returned, Eleanor gripping Oliver’s wrist while Claire tried to pull her away.
The final seconds showed Eleanor shoving Claire. Oliver stepped between them, struck the cabinet, and fell.
Damian’s slap occurred beyond the camera angle.
The footage proved the violence had not begun with him.
Naomi took the evidence.
Before they left, Hannah showed Claire the notebook.
Her mother, Rebecca Reed, had worked as a laboratory technician at Blackwood Infant Nutrition twenty-eight years earlier. She died when Hannah was ten.
Rebecca’s notes described a discontinued compound called BN-17, designed to make infants sleep longer during feeding trials.
When heated in milk, it produced the same bitter smell.
Eleanor had supervised the trial.
Several babies became dangerously ill.
One died.
The company sealed the records.
Hannah looked at Claire.

“Mrs. Blackwood did not learn this with Oliver.”
She had practiced it on children long before he was born.
