Chapter 11 - Sofia’s Choice
Sofia testified the next day.
Adrian’s attorney expected to dismantle her credibility using medical records.
Rachel began by asking about the lies Sofia told police.
“I said Lucas attacked Adrian,” Sofia answered. “I said the injuries came from a fall. Both statements were false.”
“Why did you lie?”
“Because my husband trained me to believe the truth would cost me my children.”
“Did you understand that the lie might cost Lucas his freedom?”
“Yes.”
The word sounded like a confession because it was one.
Rachel introduced the CONTINGENCIES folder.
Sofia described the forged medical reports, custody petitions, and threats.
Then Charles Wynn cross-examined her.
He read texts in which Sofia apologized to Adrian after violent incidents.
He showed affectionate anniversary messages.
He displayed photographs of vacations taken days after documented injuries.
“You could leave the house,” he said.
“Yes.”
“You had access to cars.”
“Yes.”
“Friends?”
“Fewer every year.”
“Money?”
“Accounts he monitored.”
“But you were not chained.”
Sofia looked toward Lucas.
“No. My children were.”
Wynn argued that she changed her story only after Adrian’s arrest threatened her social position.
Sofia did not defend her image.
“I changed it after hearing my son promise to do what I should have done.”
Wynn asked whether she wanted custody.
“Yes.”
“Then you benefit if Adrian is convicted.”
“Yes.”
“Would you say anything to regain your sons?”
Sofia breathed.
“No. That is why I am saying something that may prevent me from regaining Lucas.”
The courtroom quieted.
She turned toward the judge.
“I failed to protect him. I participated in covering injuries. I understand if the court decides my love is not enough to make my home safe.”
Lucas looked at her for the first time.
Sofia did not smile.
She continued.
“I am not asking him to forgive me. I am asking this court not to confuse my failure with proof that his father was harmless.”
Charles Wynn returned to his seat.
After testimony, Lucas asked Grace whether Sofia would go to jail.
“Possibly,” Grace said. “The prosecutor has not decided.”
Lucas felt anger, fear, and an unexpected desire to protect her.
He recognized the trap.
Protecting someone did not require erasing what they did.
That evening, he wrote Sofia a note.
I believe you were scared. I was scared too. I am not ready to come home.
Sofia read it in the courthouse hallway.
She pressed the paper to her chest.
