Sofia’s New House

Chapter 17 - Sofia’s New House

Two years after the trial, Sofia rented a small yellow house three streets from Grace Nolan.

It had no gate, no basement, and no private security system.

The front door had a lock everyone could open from inside.

Lucas visited more often but still lived with Grace. Ben began overnight stays after therapists and the court agreed.

Sofia kept rules on the refrigerator.

No locked interior doors.

No secret medical appointments.

No speaking for someone who could speak.

No forced affection.

Anyone may ask for another adult.

Lucas added one rule.

No “protect the family.”

Sofia crossed out the phrase with a black marker.

They replaced it with:

Protect the person in front of you.

Sofia trained as a court interpreter again. She worked with domestic-violence organizations, though she refused invitations to become a public spokesperson.

“People want the mother who finally chose correctly,” she told Lucas. “They do not know what to do with the years before.”

Lucas did.

He was learning to hold both.

Grace remained part of the family. Sofia did not treat her as a temporary substitute.

At Ben’s eighth birthday, both women stood in the kitchen arguing about cake icing.

Ben announced that two mothers were useful because one allowed extra sprinkles.

Lucas rolled his eyes.

Later, he found Sofia sitting alone on the porch.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing you need to fix.”

The answer surprised him.

Adults in the old house turned every emotion into a child’s assignment.

Sofia had learned not to.

Lucas sat beside her anyway.

“I might live here next year,” he said.

She did not reach for him.

“You may decide slowly.”

He nodded.

The next year, at fourteen, Lucas moved into the yellow house while keeping a key to Grace’s home.

His first night, he checked the hallway three times.

Sofia remained in her bedroom.

She did not ask whether he trusted her.

In the morning, Ben placed cereal on the table.

“Breakfast tomorrow,” he said.

Lucas remembered the courthouse promise.

“Still keeping it.”

Some vows did not need drama.

They survived through ordinary mornings.
