Chapter 13 - The Brother’s Second Promise
The trial recessed for two weeks while the court reviewed newly recovered evidence.
During the break, Ben began having nightmares.
He woke believing Lucas was still behind the basement door.
He refused closed rooms, hid food in his hoodie, and asked Grace every morning whether Adrian knew the address.
Lucas became watchful again.
He stopped sleeping and followed Ben from room to room.
The therapist, Dr. Leila Monroe, told him he was trying to become a parent.
“I promised to protect him.”
“Protection is not the same as controlling every danger.”
“What if adults miss something?”
“They might.”
“Then I have to watch.”
Leila placed two chairs facing each other.
“What did your father call control?”
“Protection.”
Lucas understood the warning and hated it.
He asked Ben whether he wanted Lucas outside the bathroom door.
Ben said no.
Lucas moved away.
His whole body remained tense until Ben returned.
Small separations became practice.
Grace took Ben to school while Lucas stayed home.
Sofia attended supervised therapy but did not ask to replace Grace.
At one session, Ben crawled into Sofia’s lap.
Lucas stood near the window.
Sofia asked, “May I hug you?”
“No.”
She nodded.
Later, Lucas sat beside her without touching.
Progress did not look dramatic enough for television.
It looked like permission respected repeatedly.
The boys returned to court for the verdict phase. Before entering, Ben asked Lucas to make another promise.
“What kind?”
“That if Dad goes away, you won’t go away too.”
Lucas almost answered immediately.
Then he remembered Leila’s warning.
“I can promise I will tell you before anything changes. I can promise I won’t disappear on purpose.”
Ben frowned.
“That’s not the same.”
“No.”
“Why can’t you promise forever?”
“Because forever promises make kids think bad things happen when they fail to keep them.”
Ben considered this with serious eyes.
“Can you promise breakfast tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“And the dinosaur book tonight?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
The second promise was smaller than the first.
It was also healthier.
Inside the courtroom, the brothers sat with Grace. Sofia sat one row behind them. Adrian entered in handcuffs for the first time after attempting to contact Lucas through a family friend.
His eyes found the boys.
Lucas felt fear move through him.
Then Ben whispered, “Breakfast tomorrow.”
Lucas nodded.
