The Night Behind the Basement Door

Chapter 03 - The Night Behind the Basement Door

March seventeenth began with a missing envelope.

Adrian kept confidential case files in his study, including reports from private therapists and family evaluators. Lucas entered only because he needed a charger for Ben’s school tablet.

On the floor near the desk, he found an envelope marked WARD-KESSLER REVIEW.

Inside were photographs of another child with bruises almost identical to Lucas’s.

A typed report claimed the boy had injured himself to punish his father.

Adrian had signed the report as legal consultant.

Lucas heard footsteps and pushed the envelope beneath his shirt.

Adrian entered.

He asked what Lucas was holding.

Lucas said nothing.

Adrian locked the study door.

Hours later, Sofia returned from a charity dinner and found Lucas in the basement. One eye had swollen nearly shut. Adrian told her their son had attacked him after being caught stealing.

Sofia tried to open the basement door.

Adrian took the key.

“He needs to reset.”

Ben came downstairs in his red hoodie.

He heard Lucas breathing on the other side and began crying.

Adrian ordered him upstairs.

Ben refused.

The refusal surprised everyone.

Adrian grabbed the child by the arm.

Lucas heard Ben scream and threw his body against the locked door until the old frame cracked.

He emerged, bleeding from the shoulder, and pushed Adrian away from Ben.

Adrian fell against the staircase rail.

For one second, Sofia could have opened the exterior door and taken both boys into the night.

Instead, she froze.

Adrian recovered and drove his fist into Lucas’s ribs.

Ben reached into his pocket.

The silver recorder was already running.

Sofia whispered, “Please stop.”

Adrian answered, “Then help me fix what they will say.”

He ordered her to call Dr. Malcolm Voss, the family physician and medical director of Safe Harbor.

Voss arrived after midnight carrying a leather case. He examined Lucas but did not call an ambulance. He photographed the injuries, then told Sofia exactly what to report.

“Sibling accident. Fall on stairs. Acute behavioral episode.”

Lucas listened from the floor.

Ben curled beside him.

When Voss left, Adrian locked both boys in the basement and told Sofia they would remain until morning.

Lucas found an old coal window behind a shelf.

It was too small for him.

Ben could fit.

Lucas wrapped the red hoodie tightly around his brother and pushed him through the opening.

“Run to Ms. Bell’s house,” he whispered.

Ben would not leave.

Lucas made the promise.

“If you go, I’ll tell everything. I swear.”

Ben ran barefoot through cold mud.

Nora Bell opened her door at 2:14 a.m. and found him holding the recorder.

Police reached the Hale house fourteen minutes later.

Adrian greeted them in a robe and asked whether his disturbed son had frightened the neighborhood again.

Then an officer opened the basement.

Lucas was still conscious.

Barely.
