Evelyn faced charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, obstruction, attempted destruction of evidence, and involvement in Rosa Bennett’s death.
Marcus Vale was arrested abroad and extradited.
The prosecution did not claim Evelyn personally lit the Blackridge fire.
Evidence showed she planned the confrontation, arranged false records, and helped conceal Maya after the escape.
Marcus ordered Rosa’s killing.
Evelyn funded the cover-up.
The crown, sealed letters, DNA records, toll logs, trust transfers, and Samuel’s testimony formed the case.
Maya testified.
Evelyn’s attorney asked whether wealth motivated her.
“I requested that my voting rights remain frozen.”
“You still benefit from the Ashford name.”
“I benefited from surviving people who tried to erase me.”
The attorney showed childhood drawings of stars and moons.
“Could these have been suggested by foster workers?”
“The drawings existed before anyone connected me to the tiara.”
Henry testified against his daughter.
He admitted closing the search.
Evelyn watched him with contempt.
“You chose the company too,” she said from the defense table.
Henry answered:
“Yes. That is why I am here telling the truth now.”
Evelyn took the stand.
She blamed Marcus for violence and Henry for competition.
The prosecutor asked why she slapped Maya.
Evelyn repeated:
“Because she wore something that did not belong to her.”
The prosecutor placed the trust document before her.
“It did belong to her.”
Evelyn had no answer.
She was convicted on every major conspiracy and fraud count and as an accessory to murder.
She received forty-one years.
Marcus received life.
The trial also examined why the original police investigation accepted the fire narrative so quickly.
Ashford lawyers provided experts, transportation, and private access to the site. Public investigators became dependent on the family for basic resources.
That dependence shaped which evidence appeared credible.
New state rules prohibited interested families from funding official disaster investigations directly.
Resources would come through public emergency funds and later reimbursement.
