Sophia postponed the wedding.
James supported her publicly.
Privately, he worried about the scandal’s effect on Whitmore Bank, which was negotiating a merger with Ashford International.
“Five hundred guests are already here,” his father said. “The legal matter can wait until after the ceremony.”
Sophia stared at him.
“My aunt assaulted my maid of honor and may have hidden her identity for twenty-nine years.”
“The ceremony takes twenty minutes.”
“That sentence is why it is canceled.”
James told his father the merger could collapse if they pressured her again.
The groom’s decision revealed another problem.
The wedding had been designed partly to announce the merger. Contracts waited in a private room behind the ballroom.
Evelyn planned to sign them while Henry celebrated.
The agreement transferred several Ashford trust assets into a new holding company controlled by Evelyn and Whitmore Bank.
If Maya’s identity became legally recognized before signing, she could claim rights to Eleanor’s original shares and block the merger.
Evelyn needed the wedding completed before the DNA result became public.
That was why she reacted violently to the tiara.
The crown was not only a symbol.
Its compartment connected Maya to the trust.
Sophia removed her veil.
“This was never just my wedding.”
James looked ashamed.
“I did not know the full plan.”
“But you knew business documents were waiting.”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell me?”
“No.”
Sophia ended the engagement.
The ballroom remained decorated for two people whose families had treated marriage as a transaction.
Guests left in silence.
The untouched cake stood beneath a gold monogram joining names that would never be legally joined.
The abandoned merger contracts included a clause allowing Whitmore Bank to accelerate Ashford debt if the wedding failed.
James’s father expected emotional pressure to make cancellation financially impossible.
Sophia learned that even her hesitation had been priced.
She instructed independent counsel to challenge the clause and won.
The court found the agreement coercive because it tied corporate penalties to a private marriage decision.
The ruling later influenced other family-business disputes.
