Chapter 10 - The White Room
The White Room occupied a sealed floor beneath Vale Biomedical’s oldest research building.
Its walls, floors and storage cabinets were white to reduce dust and make contamination visible. Daniel Vale used it for original trial data, patent notebooks and patient-consent records.
By the time investigators arrived, the automated deletion process had begun.
Servers flashed red. Paper shredders ran behind locked doors. A chemical suppression system was preparing to flood the archive with corrosive foam under the false label of biological contamination.
Mara Chen, a junior systems engineer, stopped the process with thirty seconds remaining.
She had recognized the unauthorized command because it came from her supervisor’s account. Rather than follow instructions, she disconnected the building from the external network.
Inside a secure cabinet, investigators found a red binder bearing Daniel Vale’s handwriting.
It documented a side effect in the company’s newest blood-filter technology. The defect was correctable, but Victor and Mason had hidden it to protect a pending sale. Three trial patients suffered complications.
Audrey discovered the binder two months earlier.
She wanted to pause distribution and notify regulators. Victor argued that disclosure would destroy the company. Mason told her thousands of jobs depended on silence.
Audrey refused.
The binder also contained a list of payments to hospital administrators who suppressed adverse-event reports. Dr. Pierce appeared repeatedly.
The conspiracy had begun before the inheritance scheme. The murder plot was an attempt to protect both money and criminal liability.
Mara recovered the login trail used to trigger the deletion. Audrey’s credentials had been accessed through a tablet inside St. Catherine’s executive suite.
Hospital CEO Lawrence Kent possessed that tablet.
Kent had publicly praised Audrey’s survival while quietly helping Victor erase the evidence.
Ortiz arrested him in his office.
The hospital board suspended him and placed Elias in temporary medical command of the case. Elias disliked administrative power, but accepted long enough to protect Audrey.
When he returned to her room, he told her the White Room was secure.
Audrey’s eyes closed in relief.
Then the heart monitor accelerated.
She was trying to move her right hand.
Her fingers lifted from the sheet and curled weakly around Margaret’s thumb.
