Chapter 03 - The Company Built on a Cure
Vale Biomedical began in a rented laboratory with one freezer, two microscopes and Daniel Vale’s refusal to accept that rare illnesses were unprofitable.
Daniel developed a blood-filtering technology that later saved thousands of patients. He became wealthy, but he never forgot the families who mortgaged homes for treatment. His company charter required that essential therapies remain available through public hospitals.
Audrey inherited his shares when he died.
She was twenty-seven.
The board expected her to sell. Instead, she studied the science, completed an executive program and became chief strategy officer. Under her leadership, Vale Biomedical expanded treatment access while remaining profitable.
Mason entered her life during that period.
He was a financial consultant hired to restructure the company’s international division. He understood numbers, attention and exactly how to make Audrey feel protected after years of carrying her father’s legacy.
Margaret disliked him immediately.
Not because he lacked wealth or status. Because he asked questions about the family trust before he asked questions about Audrey.
Daniel’s will placed forty-eight percent of Vale Biomedical in Audrey’s name. If she died unmarried, the shares transferred to the Vale Medical Foundation. If she died after marriage without descendants, her spouse received voting control for five years.
The wedding was scheduled for Saturday.
The crash happened Thursday night.
Mason believed the marriage paperwork had already been legally completed during a private civil ceremony the week before. He did not know Audrey had refused to sign the final certificate after discovering unexplained transfers from company accounts.
The public wedding was still planned because she needed time to gather evidence.
Audrey had also prepared a new trust amendment.
It removed all spousal voting rights and placed the shares under independent medical oversight. The amendment would become effective the morning after she signed it with two witnesses.
She was supposed to meet those witnesses at St. Catherine’s.
One was Dr. Elias Hart.
The other was Margaret.
Audrey had spent fourteen months pretending to reject her mother because Mason monitored every message and tracked every visit. She believed distance was the only way to keep Margaret safe.
Now she lay unconscious while the man she feared stood beside her bed holding a forged order asking doctors to let her die.
