The Woman Inside the Silence

Chapter 08 - The Woman Inside the Silence

Audrey could hear almost everything.

Voices reached her as though through water. Light pressed against her closed eyelids. Pain moved from her throat to her chest whenever someone repositioned her.

She tried to open her eyes.

Nothing happened.

She tried to move her fingers.

Nothing.

But memory returned in fragments.

Mason standing inside her office after midnight.

The unsigned trust amendment on the desk.

Pierce entering with a syringe.

Mason pressing one hand over her mouth while Pierce injected behind her ear.

The black SUV.

Cold pavement.

Mason kneeling beside her and whispering, “You should have signed.”

Audrey heard her mother crying at the bedside and wanted to call her name. She had spent fourteen months building distance between them, believing she was protecting Margaret. In the darkness, the choice felt unbearable.

Elias continued speaking.

He explained that blinking and eye movement might return before speech. He asked her to look upward for yes and downward for no.

At first, Audrey could not control the muscles.

After twenty minutes, her eyes opened a fraction.

“Can you hear me?”

Her gaze moved upward.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Elias asked whether Mason caused the crash.

Upward.

Whether Pierce injected her.

Upward.

Whether anyone else was involved.

Audrey’s eyes moved upward again.

The answer changed the case.

Mason and Pierce were not the entire conspiracy.

Elias began naming senior Vale Biomedical executives. Audrey gave no response until he said Chairman Victor Shaw.

Her gaze moved upward sharply.

Victor Shaw had served beside Daniel Vale for thirty years. He was also the man publicly leading the company while Audrey remained hospitalized.

Margaret remembered the empty locker at Central Station. Someone had opened it before she arrived.

Victor possessed company security resources, private investigators and access to Audrey’s schedule.

The conspiracy reached the boardroom.

Audrey blinked rapidly, fighting exhaustion.

Elias asked whether the blue drive contained everything.

Her eyes moved downward.

Something remained hidden.

Audrey tried to form a word. Only a faint breath escaped.

Margaret leaned close.

Again, Audrey forced air through her injured throat.

This time, Margaret heard two syllables.

“White room.”
