The Door Behind the Roses

Chapter 01 - The Door Behind the Roses

Nora did not remember how long she had been locked inside the conservatory.

The room stood behind the mountain chapel, hidden by climbing white roses and old cedar beams. It was supposed to be where the bride waited before the ceremony. Instead, Evelyn Hartwell entered with her daughter Camille and placed a new agreement on the dressing table.

“Sign it,” Evelyn said.

Nora recognized the Hartwell family seal, but the document was not the prenuptial agreement she and Ethan had reviewed. This version transferred her late father’s land at Blackwater Ridge to Hartwell Alpine Holdings for one dollar. It also stated that Nora accepted responsibility for any environmental claims connected to the property.

“My father never agreed to sell,” Nora said.

“He is dead,” Camille replied. “Dead men are rarely difficult negotiators.”

Nora reached for the door. Camille blocked it.

Evelyn’s voice remained calm. “Ethan believes you are marrying him because you love him. Let him keep that belief. Sign, walk down the aisle, and enjoy the life our family is offering.”

Nora refused.

The first blow came from Camille’s ring, cutting Nora above the eyebrow. Evelyn did not strike her. She watched, correcting her daughter whenever anger became messy. They tore the phone from Nora’s hand, locked the main door, and told the wedding coordinator the bride was having a panic attack.

What they did not know was that Nora’s grandmother had sewn a tiny voice recorder into the silver locket pinned beneath her dress. Nora activated it when Evelyn first entered.

After twenty minutes, the chapel music began.

Nora heard guests settling into their seats while Camille forced her toward the table again. When Nora pushed back, the chair overturned. She ran toward the rear door, but it had been chained from outside. Her only escape was the narrow window buried beneath the rose trellis.

She climbed onto the bench and struck the old glass with a brass candleholder.

The pane shattered.

As Nora forced herself through, thorns and broken edges tore across the open back of her gown. Pain burned from her shoulders to her waist, but the sound of the processional had already begun. If she disappeared, Evelyn would tell Ethan she ran away. Every lie the Hartwells had prepared would become his first memory of the wedding.

So Nora crossed the snow-damp garden alone.

She entered the chapel from the side aisle just as Ethan turned toward the empty doors. Guests gasped at the blood on her temple, but the lace veil hid the worst of the injuries.

At the altar, Ethan asked what happened.

Nora looked past him at Evelyn seated in the front row, composed and immaculate.

Then she turned her back to the room.

The torn lace fell open.

Long red scratches crossed her skin.

Ethan’s face changed from confusion to horror.

“Who did this?” he asked.

Nora removed the silver locket and placed it in his hand.

“Your mother wanted my father’s land,” she whispered. “And she was willing to bury me with the truth.”
