Chapter 07 - The Water Before Dawn
The pumps could not be shut down from the chapel.
Evelyn had transferred control to a remote server and locked the underground system. Engineers estimated that within six hours, contaminated water would reach the spring feeding Blackwater Valley.
Thousands of people had already stopped drinking from wells, but the surge could poison wetlands and destroy the river for decades.
Samuel’s notebook contained a hand-drawn diagram of the old mine. One emergency diversion gate led to an abandoned settling basin on Hartwell property. Opening it manually would redirect the flow away from the spring.
The gate lay two miles inside an unstable tunnel.
Lucas volunteered.
Nora refused to let him enter alone. Ethan did not tell her she could not go. He asked whether the team had enough protective equipment for three.
Federal rescue engineers accompanied them through the lower passage. Water rose around their boots. Warning alarms echoed through the rock. The tunnel narrowed where old supports had shifted.
At the first junction, a collapse separated Ethan from Nora and Lucas.
Dust filled the air. Ethan shouted through the debris that he was unhurt. Rescue workers began clearing a path, but the contamination clock continued.
Nora and Lucas moved forward.
They reached the diversion gate with ninety minutes remaining. Its wheel had rusted solid. Lucas used a hydraulic jack while Nora cleared mineral buildup from the locking teeth. The same hands scratched by the conservatory glass now turned the release lever her father had marked years earlier.
The gate moved one inch.
Then another.
A roar traveled through the tunnel.
Contaminated water changed direction, flooding the empty settling basin instead of the valley spring. Monitoring stations confirmed the surge had been contained.
Nora leaned against the stone wall, exhausted.
Lucas looked at Samuel’s diagram. “He knew this might happen.”
“He left us a way to choose differently.”
Rescue crews reopened the collapsed section. Ethan emerged with blood on his sleeve from a cut, but he was walking. He stopped when he saw Nora, as if afraid relief itself might overwhelm her.
She crossed the water and held him.
Above ground, dawn spread across the snow.
News helicopters filmed the black water filling the Hartwell basin. Federal officials announced a criminal environmental investigation. The company’s stock was suspended. Every resort development connected to the mine came under review.
From the Canadian lodge, Evelyn released a statement blaming “rogue employees” and accusing Nora of sabotaging the family to seize assets.
Then Canadian police entered the building.
Evelyn was arrested while speaking to a camera.
At the valley spring, clear water still flowed.
Nora knelt beside it and filled one of Samuel’s empty sample bottles. The water would require testing for years before anyone trusted it again.
Trust, she realized, worked the same way.
