The Brother in the Snow

Chapter 04 - The Brother in the Snow

Lucas Hartwell arrived at the hospital before dawn.

He wore a weathered canvas coat, carried a duffel bag, and looked enough like Ethan to silence the room. His hair was longer, his face leaner, and a white scar crossed his jaw.

Ethan stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.

“You knew,” he said.

Lucas did not defend himself. “I knew Mother wanted the ridge. I did not know she would attack Nora at the wedding.”

“Seven years,” Ethan said. “You vanished for seven years.”

“I was made to vanish.”

Lucas placed a waterproof field notebook on Nora’s bed. Samuel Mercer’s name was written inside the cover.

Three days before the avalanche, Samuel met Lucas at an old ranger station. Lucas had been Hartwell Alpine’s environmental compliance director. He discovered trucks entering the closed mine at night and reports rewritten before reaching regulators. When he confronted Evelyn, she threatened to expose his history of prescription addiction and remove him from the family trust.

Samuel asked Lucas to help collect independent evidence.

The notebook recorded water samples, truck numbers, and the names of workers ordered to bury damaged chemical drums. It also mentioned a hidden camera overlooking the road where Samuel died.

“Why did you not go to police?” Nora asked.

Lucas’s shame appeared before his answer.

“I did. The deputy I spoke to called my mother. That night, drugs were planted in my truck. She offered rehab instead of prosecution if I signed away my shares and left the state.”

Ethan looked sick.

“You let me believe you chose drugs over us.”

“I was using. That made her lie easier to believe.”

Lucas spent years in recovery, then lived under another name while trying to locate Samuel’s missing video. He returned after seeing footage from the chapel online. Nora’s wounds told him Evelyn had become desperate enough to stop hiding.

Sheriff Ortiz examined the notebook.

The deputy Lucas named had retired, but the county could reopen the complaint. The hidden camera might still exist if Samuel concealed it well.

Nora insisted on joining the search once doctors discharged her. Ethan objected until she looked at him.

“Do not turn concern into another decision made for me.”

He apologized immediately.

The three of them drove to the ranger station with investigators. Snow had begun falling. Lucas led them behind a collapsed woodpile where Samuel once stored equipment.

Inside a rusted trail camera, the memory card remained sealed.

The footage showed Samuel’s truck stopping on the mountain road the night before his death. A Hartwell company vehicle pulled beside him. Evelyn stepped out, followed by the mine supervisor.

The video had no sound.

But at the end, the supervisor opened Samuel’s hood while Evelyn watched.

The next morning, Samuel’s brakes failed above the avalanche zone.

Ethan stared at the screen, tears gathering in his eyes.

“My mother killed your father.”

Nora looked at the scratches healing across her hands.

“We have evidence she was there,” she said. “Now we find out what she ordered.”

Lucas closed Samuel’s notebook.

“The mine supervisor is still alive.”

Outside, fresh snow began covering the tracks leading back to the road.
