Blackwater Ridge

Chapter 03 - Blackwater Ridge

Blackwater Ridge had been in Nora’s family for four generations.

It rose beyond the Hartwell resort, a dark line of forest and granite above the valley. Tourists knew it as untouched wilderness. Nora knew the abandoned cabins, the spring beneath the eastern slope, and the narrow trail her father, Samuel Mercer, walked every Sunday.

Samuel was a hydrologist.

Six months before his death in an avalanche, he began testing water downstream from Hartwell Alpine’s private mine. The mine had officially closed decades earlier, but Samuel found fresh chemical markers in the spring. Heavy metals were leaking into wells used by three mountain communities.

He told Nora he had evidence powerful people would try to buy.

A week later, his truck was found beneath a snow slide on a road he never used.

The death was ruled accidental.

Evelyn approached Nora after the funeral with kindness, legal assistance, and an offer to purchase Blackwater Ridge. Nora refused. Two months later, Ethan entered her life through a conservation fundraiser. He listened when she spoke about her father. He remembered the names of plants she loved. He never once mentioned acquiring the land.

Now, in the hospital after the ruined wedding, Nora wondered whether their meeting had also been arranged.

Ethan sat beside her bed, staring at the unsigned transfer agreement sealed in an evidence bag.

“My mother knew about the ridge before I met you,” he admitted.

“Did you?”

“I knew Hartwell Alpine wanted an access corridor. I did not know about the contamination or your father’s tests.”

Nora searched his face for the smallest evasion.

“Why were you at that conservation fundraiser?”

“Because my brother invited me.”

Ethan’s older brother, Lucas, had disappeared from family life seven years earlier. Evelyn said he was unstable and addicted. Ethan had not spoken to him since.

Sheriff Ortiz entered with Daniel Cho and a county investigator. The locket recording had been authenticated. Evelyn and Camille were released pending charges because neither had a prior record and the injuries were not life-threatening. They were prohibited from approaching Nora.

The investigator placed photographs on the table.

The chained conservatory door. The altered agreement. A map attached to the transfer showing a proposed underground tunnel from the old mine through Blackwater Ridge.

“They were not buying scenery,” Nora said.

The tunnel would allow Hartwell Alpine to remove contaminated soil and reopen extraction without crossing public roads. Ownership of Nora’s land would also give the company control over the spring where Samuel took samples.

Daniel opened a folder recovered from the conservatory desk.

Inside was a schedule.

Bride signs at 2:30.

Courier files deed at 3:00.

Ridge team enters east parcel at 5:00.

The operation had been timed around the wedding.

Ethan stared at the handwriting.

“It is my mother’s.”

Nora turned toward the snowy mountain beyond the hospital window.

Her father had died trying to protect water that belonged to everyone.

The Hartwells had expected his grieving daughter to surrender the land while wearing a wedding dress.

Instead, they had left scratches across the only witness still standing.
