Leo Goes Back to School

Chapter 14 - Leo Goes Back to School
Leo entered seventh grade two years older than most students.
He could read well but had gaps in mathematics and science. Classrooms made him anxious because closed doors reminded him of foster placements where punishment occurred away from witnesses.
On his first day, several students asked about the coffin.
One knocked on a desk three times.
Leo left the room.
The school counselor did not call the reaction defiance.
She helped create a plan allowing Leo to step into a supervised hallway without punishment.
Marisol and James attended meetings but let him speak first.
Victor offered private tutors.
Leo accepted one through a school program used by other students. He did not want every need connected to Hale money.
The gold cuff link remained inside his backpack.
He touched it during difficult moments.
One afternoon, a classmate named Nia asked whether Victor was his grandfather.
“No.”
“Dad?”
“No.”
“Then what is he?”
Leo considered the question.
“He’s someone I came back for.”
The answer described a relationship without forcing it into adoption, debt, or family ownership.
Victor and Adrian attended school events only when invited.
Leo slowly learned that being known by them did not require becoming a symbol of their gratitude.
Leo struggled most with praise from adults who had ignored him before the funeral.
A former caseworker sent a letter calling him extraordinary.
He returned it.
At school, teachers sometimes excused unfinished work because he had “already been through enough.” Leo disliked that too.
Marisol helped him ask for support without lowered expectations.
He received tutoring, extra transition time, and trauma-informed breaks. He still completed assignments and received honest grades.
Care did not require pretending nothing was difficult.
It also did not require treating him as permanently fragile.
When Leo earned his first passing mathematics test, Victor sent no expensive gift.
He mailed a paper airplane with one word written beneath the wing:
May you like
Again.
Leo folded it into his backpack.
