Victor Wakes

Chapter 08 - Victor Wakes

Victor opened his eyes nine days after the funeral.

Adrian was asleep in a chair beside the bed.

The first sound Victor made was not a word. It was a rough knock against the metal rail.

Three times.

Adrian woke instantly.

“Dad?”

Victor tried to speak.

Only air escaped.

A nurse called the medical team. Tests confirmed awareness and movement, though weakness remained severe.

Later, when he could write, Victor asked for Leo.

The hospital social worker resisted. Contact between an adult patient and an unrelated minor required safeguards.

Victor agreed.

Leo entered with the social worker, Adrian, and Detective Brooks present.

He stood near the door.

Victor raised his bandaged hand.

Leo moved closer.

On a writing board, Victor formed six words:

I heard you at the cemetery.

Leo began crying.

“I thought I was too late.”

Victor shook his head.

He wrote:

You made them open the door.

The doctors limited the visit to ten minutes.

Before Leo left, Victor gave him the remaining gold heart cuff link. Adrian had recovered it from the hospital property bag.

The pair was now divided—one cuff link with the boy who brought evidence, one with the man who survived.

Victor’s first formal statement came days later.

He remembered Vivian placing something in his tea at home. He woke unable to move while Simon discussed pulse readings. Vivian stood beside the bed and said:

“He should have signed when I asked.”

Victor heard the death pronouncement.

He heard Vivian rehearsing grief with a communications adviser.

He heard the funeral director complain about movement inside the coffin.

Simon increased the drug.

Victor remembered darkness, wheels, rain against the hearse, and Leo’s footsteps near the loading room.

He pushed the cuff link through the gap because it was the only object he could move.

Then the boy’s voice shouted from far away:

I’ll come back.

Victor believed him.

Victor’s recovery included nightmares of being aware beneath the closed lid. Sudden darkness triggered panic. The sound of wheels on metal floors made him grip the bedrails.

Hospital staff initially praised his strength whenever he remained calm.

A trauma specialist changed the approach.

He did not need to perform courage for the people relieved that he survived.

Victor began naming fear directly.

“I thought the ground would close before anyone believed the boy.”

Leo heard this during a later visit.

“I thought they would throw me out before you knocked again.”

Their memories met from opposite sides of the coffin.

Neither person had felt heroic.

One could barely move.

The other expected punishment.

The rescue existed because both used the small ability still available to them.
