Victor Returns to Greenwood

Chapter 18 - Victor Returns to Greenwood

Victor avoided Greenwood Cemetery for years.

On the fifth anniversary of the funeral, he asked Leo to go with him.

Adrian, Marisol, and a therapist remained nearby but did not follow them between the headstones.

The empty grave had been filled and covered with grass. No marker stood there.

Victor stopped beside it.

“I remember your voice before I remember the lid opening.”

Leo looked toward the path where security officers had caught him.

“I thought the man in the suit was going to hit me.”

“Adrian?”

“He looked angry.”

“He was.”

“At me?”

“At everything.”

They stood in silence.

Victor touched the scar on his hand.

“Did you believe I would wake?”

“No.”

The honesty surprised him.

“Then why keep shouting?”

“Because you were still in there.”

Victor nodded.

Belief in miracles had nothing to do with expecting impossible outcomes.

Leo had acted because the smallest possibility of life created responsibility.

Before leaving, Victor placed no flowers and offered no speech.

He knocked three times against the wooden handle of his cane.

Leo answered with three knocks on the gold cuff link inside his palm.

Then they walked away from the grave that never received him.

At Greenwood, Victor asked why Leo had chosen three knocks.

“I didn’t,” Leo said. “That was the pattern you made.”

Victor remembered trying different rhythms so anyone listening would recognize intention rather than random movement.

Three, two, three.

The pattern later became the symbol for the emergency review program.

Leo objected to placing it on merchandise.

“No shirts.”

Victor laughed.

“No shirts.”

It appeared only inside clinical protocols, marking cases requiring a second review before irreversible decisions.

A sound once trapped inside wood became a quiet signal in hospital software.

No patient knew the history unless they asked.

The safeguard did not need the story repeated each time it worked.
