. CHAPTER 1 — The Child at the Aisle

The wedding of Alexander Hayes was supposed to be perfect.

Every newspaper in New York had called it the union of the year: the billionaire heir of Hayes Global marrying Vanessa Kingsley, the woman with the diamond smile, the famous family name, and the kind of beauty that made photographers fight for space outside hotel doors. Inside the ballroom of the St. Aurelia, white roses climbed the walls like snow. Crystal chandeliers glittered above a floor polished so brightly it reflected every candle, every guest, every lie.

Alexander stood at the altar in a black tuxedo, his face calm enough to satisfy the crowd. But beneath the calm was a strange emptiness. He had agreed to the marriage because everyone said it was time. Time to stop living in the shadow of an old heartbreak. Time to stop waiting for a woman who had disappeared nine years ago. Time to become the man his company needed.

Vanessa looked stunning in lace and pearls. She kept one hand locked around Alexander’s arm as if he were not a man, but a prize.

The minister had just begun the final blessing when a crash echoed from the rear of the ballroom.

Every head turned.

A little girl, no older than eight, stumbled through the open doors. Her hair was tangled. Her cheeks were streaked with dirt and tears. In her thin arms, she clutched a baby girl wearing a red strawberry-print romper. The baby was crying, her tiny fists twisted in the older child’s collar.

Security guards rushed behind them.

“Stop her!” Vanessa snapped, her voice cutting through the music.

But the little girl did not stop. She pushed forward between shocked guests, her knees shaking, her face desperate as if the whole world had narrowed to one man standing at the altar.

Alexander frowned. Something about the child’s eyes struck him hard.

Then she screamed, “Daddy!”

The word struck the room like shattered glass.

The baby cried louder. The little girl fell to her knees near the aisle, still holding her sister tight.

“Daddy, please,” she sobbed, looking straight at Alexander. “Mommy said I had to find you.”

The ballroom became silent.

Vanessa’s grip tightened on Alexander’s arm. “This is some disgusting stunt,” she hissed.

But Alexander could not move. The child’s eyes were not unfamiliar anymore.

They were his own.
