. CHAPTER 7 — DNA Before Diamonds

The police did not arrest anyone in a dramatic rush. They did something worse for Vanessa: they listened.

They listened to Janice. They collected the copies. They took statements from hotel staff who had seen Lily pushed away from the service entrance that morning. One young waiter admitted he had been told to call security if he saw “a dirty girl with a baby.” Another confessed Vanessa’s assistant had offered cash to keep reporters from noticing the child.

Vanessa sat at a table beneath the floral arch, still in her wedding dress, no longer a bride but a suspect in lace.

Alexander stayed with Lily and Ava in a private room off the ballroom. A doctor examined the children while Lily refused to let Ava out of sight. The baby was dehydrated but safe. Lily had blisters on her feet, a scraped knee, and the hollow hunger of a child who had spent too many nights pretending she was not hungry so the baby could have formula.

When the doctor offered her juice, Lily looked at Alexander first, asking silent permission because life had taught her that kindness could be taken back.

He nodded. “It’s yours.”

She drank with both hands around the cup.

Paul arranged an emergency DNA test. “It will take time for the official result,” he warned. “But Alex…”

“I know,” Alexander said.

He did know. He knew in Lily’s eyes. In Ava’s dark hair. In the way Lily held her lower lip between her teeth exactly as Mira had when she tried not to cry.

Lily watched him carefully. “Are you mad at Mommy?”

Alexander sat beside her. “No.”

“She said you might be.”

“I’m mad at the people who kept her away from me.”

Lily looked down. “She waited for you on my birthdays. She made cupcakes every year. Even when we only had one candle.”

Alexander pressed his fist against his mouth.

“She told me if I ever found you, I had to be brave,” Lily whispered. “But I was scared.”

“You were the bravest person in that ballroom.”

For the first time, Lily almost smiled.

Ava reached for Alexander’s finger. He let her grab it. Her tiny hand closed around him with impossible trust.

Behind the door, wedding music had stopped. Guests were leaving. Flowers were wilting under warm lights.

Alexander’s old life was collapsing.

In his hand, a baby held the beginning of a new one.
