. CHAPTER 3 — The Letter from Mira

Alexander stood in the middle of his own wedding with the envelope in his hand, afraid of paper.
The guests watched him like an audience waiting for the next act of a tragedy. His father, Richard Hayes, rose from the front row with a hardened face. Vanessa’s mother stood beside him, pale but stiff, as if she had expected a problem but not this one.
“Alexander,” Richard said quietly. “This is not the place.”
But Alexander ignored him.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter written on thin hospital stationery. The ink had blurred in places, but the voice was unmistakable. Mira’s voice. The woman he had loved before money, before duty, before everyone told him she had betrayed him.
Alexander,
If Lily finds you, it means I failed to keep them safe alone. I never left because I stopped loving you. I left because I was told you had chosen your family, and that if I came near you, our child would disappear into courts I could never fight. I was young. I was scared. I believed the wrong people.
Lily is yours. Ava is yours too. I know this sounds impossible. I know you will be angry. But please do not be angry at them.
I tried to reach you. Every letter came back. Every call was blocked. If you are reading this, someone finally failed to keep us buried.
Please choose them faster than I was able to choose myself.
Mira.
Alexander read the last line twice because the room had started to tilt.
Ava. The baby’s name was Ava.
Lily wiped her nose with the back of her hand. “Mommy got sick after Ava was born. She said you would know the lighthouse.”
Alexander looked at the pendant again. His throat closed.
Richard Hayes moved closer. “This is emotional manipulation. You cannot verify any of this in front of hundreds of people.”
Vanessa seized the opening. “Exactly. This woman was unstable, Alex. You told me that yourself. She took money and left.”
Alexander turned slowly. “I never told you that.”
Vanessa blinked.
The silence sharpened.
“I never told you about Mira taking money,” Alexander said. “Only my father told me that.”
Vanessa’s face lost color beneath her makeup.
In Lily’s arms, baby Ava reached toward Alexander, still crying, as if she recognized safety without knowing his name.
Alexander handed the letter to his attorney in the front row. Then he removed the white rose from his tuxedo lapel and dropped it onto the altar steps.

The minister’s mouth fell open.
Alexander looked at Vanessa. “The wedding is over.”
