. CHAPTER 6 — The Price of Silence

Vanessa tried to recover with tears.

She was good at tears. They arrived quickly, bright and delicate, the kind that had once made magazines call her vulnerable. She stepped toward Alexander with both hands raised.

“I was protecting you,” she said. “Your father came to my family. He said Mira was trying to trap you. He said she would ruin your future.”

Alexander did not move.

Vanessa swallowed. “I was young too. I believed him. I only spoke to her once.”

Janice laughed bitterly. “Once? You offered her fifty thousand dollars to disappear. When she refused, you told the clinic she was unstable. You told security she was stalking Alexander. You helped erase her.”

Vanessa’s tears hardened. “You have no idea what was at stake.”

“A child was at stake,” Alexander said.

“No,” Vanessa snapped, losing control. “Everything was at stake. Your company. Your inheritance. The Kingsley merger. You think men like you get to marry girls like Mira Cole? A waitress with a cheap pendant and no family power?”

Lily covered Ava’s ears, though Ava was too young to understand.

Alexander saw the gesture and felt shame burn through him. An eight-year-old girl had more dignity than the woman he almost married.

Richard finally spoke. “Enough. Alexander, business families make difficult decisions. That girl would have destroyed you.”

Alexander turned on him. “My daughter?”

Richard’s mouth tightened. “A scandal. A liability. A mistake.”

The word mistake changed the room.

Alexander walked to Lily and knelt in front of her. He did not care about the cameras, the guests, the board members, the headlines waiting outside.

“You are not a mistake,” he said. “Neither is Ava.”

Lily stared at him as if afraid to believe the sentence.

“Do you understand me?” he asked softly.

She nodded, tears spilling again.

Paul Mercer returned from a call near the window. “Police are downstairs. Child services too, at my request. Medical team is on the way. And Alex—there’s more. The wedding planner’s assistant says Vanessa ordered staff not to let a woman named Janice or any child into the building.”

Vanessa backed away.

Alexander stood.

The ballroom doors opened again, but this time it was not a child begging to be heard.

It was the truth, entering with badges.
