. CHAPTER 2 — Vanessa’s Smile Breaks

For three seconds, nobody breathed.

Then the room erupted.

Guests whispered behind jeweled hands. Phones rose. Security guards froze between obedience and confusion. Vanessa released Alexander’s arm and stepped forward, her bridal veil trembling over her shoulders. Her smile was gone, replaced by something cold and sharp.

“Who let this filthy child inside?” she demanded.

The little girl flinched but did not lower her eyes. She held the baby tighter, rocking her with the instinct of someone who had learned too young that comfort was a duty, not a gift.

Alexander stepped down from the altar.

“Don’t,” Vanessa said quickly, grabbing his sleeve. “Alex, don’t touch them. We don’t know where they came from.”

The girl heard that. Her lips trembled. “We came from the bus station.”

A few guests gasped.

Vanessa laughed once, cruel and nervous. “Of course you did. Someone paid you to do this, didn’t they? Who sent you? A reporter? One of his enemies?”

The girl shook her head. “No. Mommy sent me.”

Alexander crouched in front of her. Up close, he saw dried mud on her dress, a bruise on one elbow, and a small silver chain around her neck. His heart kicked violently when he saw the pendant: a tiny silver lighthouse.

He had bought that pendant for Mira Cole the summer before she vanished.

His voice barely worked. “What’s your name?”

“Lily,” the girl whispered. “Lily Cole.”

The name pulled the blood from his face.

Vanessa bent down beside him with an ugly sweetness. “Honey, that’s a nice story. But this man isn’t your father. He’s getting married. You need to leave now.”

Lily reached into the pocket of her dirty dress and pulled out a folded envelope, damp at the corners from her sweaty hand. On the front, in faded handwriting, were two words:

For Alexander.

He knew that handwriting.

His legs nearly gave out.

Vanessa saw the envelope and lunged. “Give me that.”

Lily jerked back, terrified.

Alexander caught Vanessa’s wrist before she could snatch it.

The room went still again.

“Don’t touch her,” he said.

Vanessa’s eyes widened. She had never heard that tone from him before.

May you like

Alexander gently took the envelope from Lily’s shaking hand. His thumb brushed the paper. He did not open it yet because some part of him already knew: whatever was inside would destroy the wedding.

And maybe save his life.
