CHAPTER 2: The Woman in Pearls

Eleanor Vale had built her life on public perfection.

She donated to hospitals, chaired charity luncheons, smiled beside governors, and spoke on stage about protecting vulnerable children. Tonight, her pearl necklace rested perfectly against her collarbone, her hair was swept into a glossy dark wave, and every photographer in the room had already captured her seated at the best table with the largest pledge card.

A boy taking her glass was not just rude.

It was an insult in front of people whose opinions mattered.

Ethan held the wineglass with both hands. His fingers trembled, but he did not put it down. His eyes kept dropping into the red liquid, then back to her face.

“Ma’am,” he said, breathless, “please don’t drink this.”

The man beside Eleanor, a tall donor named Richard Harlan, gave a sharp laugh. “Is this some kind of performance?”

A few guests chuckled. Others leaned closer, hungry for scandal. The boy looked too small under the chandelier light, but Eleanor saw only embarrassment.

She rose from her chair slowly.

“Who brought this child into the ballroom?” she asked.

Ethan swallowed. “I saw something in it.”

Eleanor stepped closer, her voice turning sweet in the most dangerous way. “You saw something? Or you saw a chance to steal from people who don’t watch their belongings every second?”

The word steal hit the room like a dropped plate.

Ethan shook his head. “No. I wasn’t stealing.”

But Eleanor did not want an answer. She wanted control back.

And in that room, control always belonged to the person with the microphone, the money, and the cruelest smile.
