CHAPTER 11: The Apology No One Expected

The ballroom was still full when Eleanor returned.
The gala could not continue, but nobody had left. The guests remained at their tables, whispering around untouched desserts and half-empty glasses. Police moved through the room. The musicians had packed their instruments in silence.
Eleanor walked to the center of the floor.
Her pearls looked heavier now.
Mara tensed when Eleanor approached Ethan, but Detective Bennett gave a small nod. It was safe.
Eleanor stopped in front of the boy.
For once, she did not perform. She did not lift her chin for cameras. She did not soften her voice for applause.
She simply lowered herself to one knee so her eyes were level with his.
“Ethan,” she said, “I was wrong.”
The room went quiet.
“I accused you before I listened. I embarrassed you because I cared more about how I looked than what you were trying to tell me. You saved me, and I treated you cruelly.”
Ethan stared at her, unsure what to do with an apology from someone who had seemed untouchable.
Eleanor’s eyes shone. “I am sorry.”
Mara pressed her lips together, fighting emotion.
Ethan looked at the floor. “I didn’t want you to get hurt.”
Eleanor nodded slowly. “I know that now.”
