CHAPTER 9: The Camera Above the Chandelier

Detective Laura Bennett arrived with two officers and a calm voice that made everyone stop shouting.
She sealed the glass. She sealed the packet. She separated Richard from the crowd and asked hotel security to lock down the exits. Then she asked one question that changed everything.
“Where are the cameras?”
The gala manager led her to a small control room behind the ballroom. Eleanor, Mara, Ethan, Sam, and two officers followed. Richard protested from the hallway until an officer told him to stay quiet.
The security footage was grainy but clear enough.
At 8:13, Eleanor accepted a fresh glass of wine from a passing server.
At 8:14, Richard leaned close, pretending to whisper. His left hand moved across the table. He slid Eleanor’s glass two inches, then replaced it with another from his side.
At 8:15, Ethan appeared in the frame, staring toward the table from the edge of the ballroom.
At 8:16, Eleanor lifted the switched glass.
At 8:16 and six seconds, Ethan ran.
Nobody spoke.
Detective Bennett replayed it twice.
Eleanor covered her mouth with one trembling hand.
Mara looked down at her son. “You saw all that?”
Ethan nodded.
“I thought maybe I was wrong,” he whispered. “But then the bug moved.”
Detective Bennett turned to him. Her voice softened.
May you like
“You may have saved her life.”
The boy who had been called a thief stood under the security monitor, still blinking back tears.
