CHAPTER 12: Richard’s Last Smile

Richard Harlan still tried to smile as the officers escorted him through the ballroom.
It was a terrible smile, stretched over panic.
“This is a misunderstanding,” he told the guests. “My attorneys will resolve this before breakfast.”
No one answered.
The same people who had laughed with him an hour earlier now watched him as if he carried a disease. Power in that world was fragile. It disappeared the moment cameras and police pointed the wrong direction.
Detective Bennett read him the charges that could be filed pending lab results and further investigation. Attempted poisoning. Tampering with evidence. Reckless endangerment. Conspiracy, if they found help.
Richard turned his head toward Eleanor. “You owe me everything.”
Eleanor’s face hardened. “No. I owed you trust. You destroyed that.”
He looked at Ethan. “You little—”
An officer tightened his grip. “Careful.”
Ethan did not hide behind his mother this time. He stood still, eyes bright with fear but steady.
Richard was led out through the same grand doors guests had entered under flashes and applause.
Outside, the flashing lights were different.
Red and blue.
When the doors closed behind him, the room exhaled.
But the damage was not finished. Richard’s arrest would expose contracts, missing foundation money, fake vendors, and private threats hidden behind years of charity smiles.

Ethan had not only stopped a poisoned glass.
He had cracked open an empire built on polished lies.
