CHAPTER 16: The Foundation Cracks

Richard’s arrest pulled a thread no one expected.
Investigators found that several vendors connected to the gala were shell companies. Donations meant for children’s medical programs had been redirected through consulting contracts. Richard had used charity events to launder influence, hide debts, and pressure Eleanor into approving transfers she barely reviewed.
Eleanor had not placed the spider in the glass.
But she had been careless with power.
That truth hurt her more deeply than the public humiliation. For years, she had enjoyed being the beautiful face of generosity while men like Richard handled “the complicated details.” She had accepted applause without checking the machinery behind it.
Now children’s grants were missing. Hospital programs had been delayed. Families had waited for help that never came because wealthy adults treated philanthropy like a stage.
Eleanor resigned as chair within the week.
But she did not disappear.
She called every board member into an emergency meeting and invited reporters inside. No private spin. No polished lie.
Mara watched the broadcast from home with Ethan beside her.
Eleanor stood at a podium, not smiling.
“A child saw the truth in a glass,” she said. “The rest of us should have seen it in the books.”
Ethan looked at his mother. “Is she still mad at me?”
May you like
Mara put an arm around him.
“No,” she said. “I think you made her better.”
