The brake invoice from Victor’s archive identified the mechanic who altered Daniel’s car: Owen Lask.
Maya’s investigators found him living in a retirement community near the desert border under a different surname.
Sofia and Elias traveled there with a former police detective.
Owen refused to speak until Sofia showed him Daniel’s letter.
He began crying before he reached the second line.
Victor had ordered him to weaken a brake line, claiming the vehicle would be used for a controlled insurance test. Owen realized the truth after hearing about the crash.
Roland Pike paid him to falsify the inspection report and leave the country.
“Why did you never come forward?” Sofia asked.
“Because every year I waited made the next year harder.”
It was the same logic Elias had fought, multiplied by guilt.
Owen agreed to provide a sworn statement and surrender the original payment records.
Then he revealed something unexpected.
Daniel survived the initial crash.
A highway emergency operator received a call from his vehicle. Daniel said the brakes had failed and that he was trapped but conscious.
The call vanished from the official file.
Owen had heard a copy when Roland forced him to alter the report.
The emergency dispatch center archived old recordings on magnetic tape. Maya obtained a preservation order.
Technicians restored the audio.
Daniel’s voice emerged through static.
“My name is Daniel Bennett. My car has gone over the north ridge. The brake line was cut. Send police, not Cross security.”
The dispatcher promised help.
Seven minutes later, a private Cross Automotive response vehicle reached the scene before the ambulance.
Victor had not merely arranged the failure.
His people controlled who reached Daniel first.
The recording ended with a door opening and Daniel saying one final name.
“Roland.”
Police arrested Roland Pike that evening.
Under questioning, he denied killing Daniel. He claimed Victor ordered him only to retrieve documents from the car.
Investigators asked why emergency medical help was delayed twenty-six minutes.
Roland requested a lawyer.
Sofia listened to her father’s final call alone.
For years she had pictured him dying instantly, spared fear and pain.
Dominic had given her that comforting lie.
Now grief returned with a sharper edge.
