Chapter 18 - What Dominic Lost

Dominic was not charged in Daniel’s death or the corporate fraud, but public forgiveness did not arrive with his father’s conviction.

He lost his executive title, company residence, social circle, and access to the wealth he once treated as proof of superiority.

The red wedding suit was returned by a hotel employee who found it in storage.

Dominic donated it to a theater.

He began attending court-ordered counseling related to the assault on Elias. He also agreed to perform community service at an automotive training center across town.

On his first day, an instructor handed him a mop.

Dominic almost laughed at the obvious symbolism.

Then he saw the instructor’s expression and understood no one had arranged a lesson for him. The floor was simply dirty.

He cleaned it.

Weeks later, Elias visited the center to inspect a donated engine.

Dominic stood beside a group of apprentices in ordinary work clothes.

“I owe you an apology,” he said.

“You owe many people more than words.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Dominic looked toward a teenager struggling to remove a rusted bolt.

“I am beginning to.”

Elias handed him a wrench.

“Then help him without making him feel stupid.”

That became their only agreement.

Sofia did not resume the relationship. She could acknowledge Dominic’s cooperation without rewriting the harm he had caused. He had loved her, but he had also participated in keeping her ignorant. Both things were true.

One evening, Dominic returned the brass key to her.

“I took it from the evidence table during the first police search,” he admitted. “I thought I might still find a way to control the car.”

“Why give it back now?”

“Because I finally understand that not everything near me belongs to me.”

Sofia accepted the key.

There was no reconciliation kiss, no promise of another life together.

Some lessons arrived too late to restore what pride had broken.

But late was not the same as useless.
