The Mechanic’s Ledger

Chapter 08 - The Mechanic’s Ledger

Elias lived in a small apartment above an abandoned machine shop.

The walls held no awards, no luxury photographs, and no evidence that he had once helped build a billion-dollar company. Shelves were filled with engine parts labeled in careful handwriting. A single framed photograph showed his wife, Rosa, who had died twelve years earlier.

Behind a cabinet, Elias removed a red metal toolbox.

Inside were notebooks documenting every major design change made during the company’s first fifteen years. Each entry included dates, part numbers, costs, and signatures.

“Engineers keep records because memory becomes prideful,” he said.

The ledgers proved that many inventions attributed to Victor were created by Elias and Daniel. Yet the most important notebook was missing.

Elias believed Daniel took it the night before his fatal crash.

Sofia remembered that her father had visited the family’s old lakeside cabin shortly before he died. Victor sold the property after the funeral, claiming debts required it.

Maya checked the current ownership.

The cabin belonged to a shell company connected to Cross Automotive.

They drove there before sunrise.

The house had been empty for years. Dust covered the furniture, but the lock on Daniel’s study was new.

Elias opened it with a tool from his pocket.

Inside, someone had searched everything: drawers emptied, floorboards lifted, walls cut open. Victor’s people had been looking for the same evidence.

Sofia stood where her father once worked and tried to remember childhood details.

He used to hide birthday presents in places she could reach but adults ignored.

She knelt beside the old radiator.

Beneath it was a wooden model of the Sovereign, small enough to fit in her hand. One wheel turned differently from the others.

Inside the model was a memory card.

The files contained photographs of altered contracts, recordings of meetings, and scans of the missing ledger.

The final audio file was dated the night before Daniel’s death.

Victor’s voice said, “Sign the transfer, and Sofia never needs to know how close you came to losing her.”

Daniel answered, “If anything happens to me, Elias will open the car.”

A third voice entered the conversation.

Dominic’s.

He was nineteen years old.

And he said, “My father is right. Some names are meant to survive. Others are meant to disappear.”
