The Bride Who Stepped Aside

Chapter 02 - The Bride Who Stepped Aside
Sofia helped Elias sit on a low equipment bench.
“Can you breathe?”
“I have had worse mornings,” he said, forcing a smile.
Dominic grabbed her wrist. “We are leaving.”
She pulled free.
“You pushed him.”
“He embarrassed me in front of my staff.”
“Your staff?”
Dominic looked around the service bay. The workers stood in silence, but their silence no longer felt obedient. It felt like judgment.
He lowered his voice.
“Do not create a scene five minutes before our wedding.”
“You created it.”
A photographer approached cautiously. “Mr. Cross, the convoy is ready.”
Dominic turned toward the limousine and caught his reflection in the polished black door: red suit, white shirt, perfect hair, furious eyes. He straightened his jacket as though appearance could restore authority.
Then Elias spoke.
“Ask him who owns this car.”
Dominic stopped.
Sofia looked from Elias to the vehicle. “Cross Automotive owns it.”
“No,” Elias said. “The title belongs to the Bennett Heritage Trust.”
Sofia’s father had created the trust before his death, but she had been told its assets were sold to cover company debts. Dominic had personally shown her the liquidation papers.
“That is impossible,” she whispered.
Elias reached inside his coverall and removed a small brass key darkened by age.
“Your father gave me this eleven years ago. He said I should use it only if the Cross family tried to take the final thing they had not earned.”
Dominic lunged for the key.
Sofia stepped in front of him.
“Do not touch him again.”
For one suspended second, bride and groom faced each other beside the car that was meant to carry them to the altar.
Dominic laughed, but the sound was thin.
“You are choosing a mechanic’s fairy tale over your husband?”
“You are not my husband yet.”
The words landed harder than a slap.
The service bay doors stood open. Beyond them, the wedding convoy waited in the sun. Drivers, assistants, and guests watched from a distance. The drone still hovered overhead.
Dominic pointed toward the bridal suite.
“Go fix your makeup. I will handle this.”
Sofia removed the diamond engagement ring from her finger.
She placed it on the hood of the limousine.
“No,” she said. “You have handled enough.”

Then she turned to Elias.
“Show me what the key opens.”
