The Compartment Beneath the Seat

Chapter 03 - The Compartment Beneath the Seat

The brass key did not fit the doors, the trunk, or the glove box.

Elias directed one of the mechanics to remove the limousine’s rear seat. Dominic protested that they were damaging company property, but no one obeyed him.

Beneath the leather cushion was a narrow steel panel stamped with a small symbol: two wings surrounding the letter M.

Sofia recognized it instantly.

Her father, Daniel Bennett, used to draw the same mark on every machine he designed. He called it the Mercer-Bennett crest, honoring the partnership between himself and Elias.

The brass key turned once.

Inside the compartment lay a waterproof metal case.

Dominic’s confidence finally cracked.

“That case belongs to Cross Automotive.”

Elias looked at him. “Then why does your family not have the key?”

Sofia opened the lid.

The first item was a photograph taken twenty-five years earlier. Daniel Bennett and a younger Elias stood inside the same building, both covered in grease, smiling beside the unfinished frame of the first Sovereign automobile.

Between them stood Victor Cross, Dominic’s father.

Unlike the other two men, Victor’s hands were clean.

Beneath the photograph was an original patent certificate naming Daniel Bennett and Elias Mercer as co-inventors of the Sovereign drive system. A second document showed Victor as financial administrator, not founder.

Sofia’s fingers trembled.

All her life, the official company history said Victor had created Cross Automotive from nothing, later hiring Daniel as chief engineer.

“This cannot be real,” Dominic said.

Elias removed one more envelope.

Daniel’s handwriting covered the front.

For Sofia, when she is old enough to know what pride cost us.

She pressed the envelope to her chest.

Dominic reached again, but this time two mechanics blocked him.

His phone began ringing. His father’s name flashed across the screen.

Dominic answered.

Victor Cross did not ask about the delayed convoy.

“Where is Elias?” he demanded.

Dominic stared at the metal case.

“He opened it.”

Silence.

Then Victor spoke in a voice Sofia had never heard from him.

“Take the documents. Destroy the car if you must. Do not let her leave with that case.”

Sofia heard every word.

Dominic ended the call.

Outside, sirens approached—not police, but the private security team Victor used when he wanted problems to disappear quietly.

Elias closed the case.

“Now you understand,” he told Sofia. “The stain on the car was never what frightened him.”
