Chapter 13 - The Hearing
The first court hearing happened six weeks later.
Daniel’s attorneys called the forged transfer an administrative mistake. They described the mortgage as an unfinished application and argued no money had changed hands.
The prosecutor answered with the notary stamp, practice signatures, lender correspondence, and Vanessa’s messages.
Claire testified for two hours.
Daniel watched her from across the courtroom.
Claire explained the trust.
She explained the house.
She explained how Daniel intercepted mail, removed access, and used her mother’s death to create a false story of abandonment.
Daniel looked down.
The judge upheld protective orders preventing him from entering the property or contacting Claire outside legal channels. The mortgage fraud case moved forward.
Vanessa cooperated and faced separate consequences for removing Claire’s belongings and helping create the appearance of abandonment.
When Claire left the courthouse, reporters waited.
She gave no dramatic statement.
