Daniel’s shoulders stiffened.
The attempted deed transfer was connected to a mortgage application for 1.8 million dollars.
The lender believed Daniel owned the house.
The application included an appraisal, insurance records, and a planned closing scheduled for Monday.
Claire felt the rain turn colder.
“What was the money for?” Santos asked.
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa stepped away from him.
“You said it was for the new company.”
Claire looked at her.
“What company?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Daniel snapped, “Do not answer.”
Officer Santos’s voice hardened.
“She may answer any question she chooses.”
Vanessa stared at the wet driveway, then at the police cruiser.
“Daniel said he was buying out his partners. He promised we would move to California after the closing.”
Claire almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because Daniel had promised Vanessa a future funded by Claire’s house.
The officer asked Vanessa whether she knew Claire still lived there.
Vanessa looked at the scattered clothes.
Her silence lasted too long.
“Yes,” she admitted.
Daniel swore under his breath.
Vanessa faced him.
“You said she had no legal claim.”
Claire closed the folder.
