The Trustee Arrives

Officer Santos helped her around the puddle. Margaret thanked him, then handed Officer Kim a certified trust memorandum and a sworn statement.
“I did not approve a transfer,” she said. “I did not authorize a mortgage. I did not sign the consent attached to the lender packet.”
Officer Kim asked whether she recognized the signature.
“It resembles mine.”
“Is it yours?”
“No.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Margaret, this can be resolved privately.”
She looked at him with open disgust.
“You forged my name to mortgage my sister’s house.”
“It is Claire’s house.”
Margaret pointed her cane toward the wet quilt.
“Then why are her belongings in the street?”
Daniel had no answer.
Margaret turned to Claire.
“Are you safe?”
Claire nodded, though tears mixed with rain on her face.
Vanessa watched them.
“You knew the police would come,” she said.
Claire looked at her.
“I knew the truth would.”
Margaret’s file also contained a letter from the lender. The mortgage closing was already suspended. The title company had referred the matter for criminal review.
Daniel’s plan had failed before Claire reached the driveway.
