A year later, the front room became an office.
Claire created the Sullivan Housing Justice Project, a small legal clinic helping people facing deed fraud, coercive transfers, and property theft by relatives or partners.
Claire hired two attorneys and a title investigator. Margaret served on the advisory board. Officer Kim visited once to teach staff how to preserve evidence before confronting a suspected fraudster.
Claire kept her mother’s quilt in the front office after it was professionally cleaned. One faint stain remained in a corner where the rainwater had carried driveway dirt into the fabric.
Margaret suggested repairing it.
Claire said no.
“The stain belongs to the story.”
She also restored every family photograph Daniel had hidden. The wedding picture stayed in storage, not because she feared it, but because a former promise did not deserve the most visible wall.
The house was not a prize she won from Daniel.
