Chapter 01 - Five Minutes Later

Victor Rowe did not raise his voice when Amelia told him where she was. He asked for the penthouse address, the security code, and whether Damian had left. Then he said four words that altered the balance of power in three countries.

“Activate the protection clause.”

Amelia did not understand what he meant. Pain had reduced the world to the cold marble beneath her cheek and the broken glass near her hand. She heard Victor speaking to someone else, his tone clipped and exact. A medical team. Private security. A criminal attorney. A forensic technician. None of them were to call Damian. None were to touch the room until every surface had been photographed.

Within five minutes, the first consequence reached Damian Vale.

He was in the private elevator with Cassandra Sloan, his lover and newly appointed communications director, when his phone vibrated. The company’s emergency credit line had been suspended. Before he could open the message, another arrived: the board had called an extraordinary meeting for eight the next morning. Then his black corporate card failed to authorize the waiting limousine.

Cassandra laughed at first. “Even billionaires miss payments.”

Damian did not answer. He knew the lender behind Vale Meridian’s credit line. Rowe Capital had guaranteed the company during its expansion, back when Damian was a charming founder with more confidence than cash. Victor Rowe had signed the papers because Amelia believed in her husband.

The elevator opened into the lobby. Two uniformed officers were already crossing the marble toward them.

Damian’s expression changed, but only for a second.

He took Cassandra’s hand and walked past the officers as though nothing had happened. He had always survived by acting like the room belonged to him until everyone else agreed. In the waiting car, he called the penthouse’s security chief and ordered all internal footage erased.

The chief’s answer was quiet.

“I no longer have access, sir.”

Back upstairs, Amelia heard the front doors open. A woman in navy medical scrubs entered first, followed by two security officers and an older man carrying a steel evidence case. They moved carefully around the glass. One officer knelt near Amelia without touching her.

“Mrs. Vale, my name is Dana Brooks. Your father sent us. You are safe now.”

Safe.

The word felt unfamiliar.

As the paramedic examined her, Amelia looked toward the ceiling. The small red light above the bookcase was still blinking. Damian had forgotten that she designed the penthouse’s original smart-home system before marriage, and that its emergency archive did not belong to Vale Meridian.

It belonged to her.

Dana followed her gaze. “Is that camera active?”

May you like

Amelia closed her eyes and let one tear slide into her hair.

“Yes,” she whispered. “It saw everything.”
