The Price of Quiet

Chapter 07 - The Price of Quiet

The board meeting was held on the forty-sixth floor of Vale Meridian Tower, where the walls were glass and the city below looked too small to matter. Twelve directors sat around a black table. Their attorneys occupied the chairs behind them. No one touched the coffee.

Amelia joined by secure video from the hospital. Her bruises were visible. Simone had advised makeup, not to hide the injuries but to control how cameras might later frame her. Amelia refused. Damian had spent years editing her reality. She would not begin her freedom by helping him edit the evidence.

Chairman Malcolm Pierce spoke first.

The board offered to suspend Damian, appoint an interim chief executive, and create a fund for “family wellness initiatives.” In exchange, Amelia would agree that the incident was personal and unrelated to corporate governance. She would not challenge prior stock decisions or release the penthouse footage.

“What is the fund worth?” Amelia asked.

Malcolm glanced at his attorney. “Twenty-five million dollars.”

“And what is my silence worth?”

No one answered.

Amelia placed the Lark patent records on camera. “This company has earned billions from technology derived from my mother’s research. Its chief executive forged my authorization, prepared to have me declared incompetent, and assaulted me while demanding control of my voting trust. That is not personal. It is the company’s operating method.”

One director protested that thousands of employees could lose jobs if investors panicked.

Amelia had expected that argument. Damian often placed innocent people between himself and accountability.

“I am not asking you to destroy the company,” she said. “I am asking you to stop using the company as a shield for the man who endangered it.”

She offered terms of her own. Damian would be removed immediately. An independent examiner would review every patent, acquisition, and executive payment connected to Project Lark. Employees who cooperated would receive legal protection. Any recovered funds would stabilize payroll and pensions before shareholders received distributions.

The directors requested a recess.

During the break, Damian entered the building through the underground garage using an old access credential. Security cameras caught him taking the private elevator to the forty-sixth floor. He walked into the boardroom before the vote.

“You cannot remove me from what I created,” he said.

Malcolm stood. “You are under a court restriction.”

Damian ignored him and looked at Amelia on the screen.

For a moment, his expression resembled the man she had married—hurt, intimate, almost gentle.

“Amelia, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”

She felt the old reflex rise: protect him, calm him, prevent the next explosion.

Then she saw Rosa seated behind Simone in the hospital room. She saw Victor at the window and Detective Ortiz near the door. People who had chosen truth even while afraid.

“No,” Amelia said.

Damian’s face hardened.

He leaned toward the camera. “Without me, you are nothing but your father’s damaged daughter.”

Amelia held his gaze.

“Then why did you need my signature?”

Security officers entered and escorted him out while the directors voted.

Eleven in favor of removal.

One abstention.

By noon, Damian Vale no longer controlled the company bearing his name.

But before leaving the building, he sent one message from a hidden phone.

BURN LARK. START WITH HALL.
