The Doctor Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 08 - The Doctor Who Knew Too Much

Dr. Peter Hall disappeared before federal agents reached his home.

His car was found at LaGuardia Airport, but no record showed him boarding a flight. His passport remained in a kitchen drawer. The back door of his townhouse was unlocked, and a half-finished cup of coffee sat cold beside an open laptop.

On the screen was a draft email addressed to Amelia.

I told myself your mother’s work would save lives even if the truth stayed buried. That was the first lie. Every payment after that required another.

The message ended mid-sentence.

Detective Ortiz believed Hall had tried to confess after learning about the laboratory raid. Damian’s final instruction—BURN LARK. START WITH HALL—suggested someone else had intercepted him first.

The police traced the hidden phone’s message to Marcus Venn, Damian’s longtime security chief. Marcus had removed the penthouse recorder, threatened Rosa, and managed private operations no one placed on company calendars. He had also served in the army with Damian’s older brother, who died under mysterious circumstances before Vale Meridian was founded.

Amelia remembered Marcus differently. He was the man who checked the locks twice, carried groceries when Victor visited, and stood outside hospital rooms pretending not to listen. Damian had normalized his presence until surveillance felt like protection.

Agents searched Marcus’s apartment and found it empty. In a storage unit under another name, they discovered copied passports, cash, burner phones, and photographs of Amelia taken over four years. Some showed her entering therapy. Others showed her meeting Victor. One captured Rosa’s son outside his university.

On the back of each photo was a date and a brief instruction.

Pressure. Delay. Isolate.

Amelia sat in the hospital chapel after seeing them. The room was empty except for a row of candles and a wooden cross. She had believed her marriage failed gradually through arguments, distance, and her own inability to make Damian happy. The photographs proved the distance had been engineered.

Victor found her there.

“I want to ask why you stayed,” he said. “But that is the wrong question.”

Amelia looked at him.

“The right question is why he was allowed to do this for so long.”

Victor sat beside her. He admitted Rowe Capital’s board had ignored early complaints about Damian because Vale Meridian’s returns were exceptional. He had suspected patent irregularities but chose negotiation over investigation to protect Amelia’s marriage.

“We all made your peace more important than your safety,” he said.

Amelia rested her head against the wall. “Then help me change what happens next.”

That evening, Cassandra Sloan arrived at the district attorney’s office with an attorney and a black phone. She offered recordings in exchange for consideration on charges related to the forged transfer.

The most important recording was not titled AFTER AMELIA SIGNS.

It was labeled THE CRASH.

Damian’s voice came first.

“Hall changed the medication. Marcus changed the route. Elise should never have reached that curve awake.”

Cassandra’s voice asked, “And Amelia believes it was an accident?”

Damian laughed.

“She believes whatever grief needs her to believe.”
