Chapter 13 - The Trial of Damian Vale
The courthouse steps were crowded before sunrise on the first day of trial.
Reporters filled the barricaded sidewalk. Former employees held photographs of Elise Rowe. Survivors of domestic abuse stood silently with white ribbons pinned to their coats. Lark Industries workers arrived in buses, not to defend the founder, but to show that the company had survived him.
Damian entered through a side door in a dark suit. He had lost weight, yet his posture remained controlled. When he saw Amelia in the corridor, he slowed.
“You look well,” he said.
A marshal moved between them.
Amelia did not answer.
The prosecution began with the penthouse. Detective Ortiz described the evidence. Rosa testified about the assault and the guardianship page. The jury watched security footage showing Damian striking Amelia while demanding a signature.
No one in the courtroom moved.
Damian’s attorney argued the footage lacked context. On cross-examination, he asked whether Amelia had provoked her husband by threatening to destroy his company.
Amelia’s voice remained steady.
“I threatened to stop him from stealing what was not his.”
Lewis tried to portray her as vindictive. He displayed messages in which she apologized after previous arguments and asked Damian to come home.
“Those do not sound like the words of a woman afraid for her life,” he said.
“They are the words of a woman trying to survive the next hour.”
The courtroom fell quiet.
Cassandra testified next. She admitted her affair, her role in the smear campaign, and her failure to help Amelia. The defense attacked her character, but every insult only reinforced the system Damian created. Cassandra played the recording labeled AFTER AMELIA SIGNS.
Damian’s voice filled the room.
“Once the trust is mine, she can be sick forever.”
Dr. Hall explained the false medical records and Elise’s medication. Marcus described the crash plan and Nathan’s death. Each witness arrived carrying guilt, and each placed part of it at Damian’s feet.
The defense’s strongest moment came when a technical expert claimed the audio files could have been altered. For two hours, doubt entered the room.
Then prosecutors called an engineer from the phone manufacturer. The files contained continuous hardware signatures impossible to recreate through editing. They were authentic.
Damian’s expression finally changed.
During a recess, he asked to speak privately with Amelia. The judge denied him. He wrote a note instead.
You know me better than they do.
Simone offered to keep it as evidence.
Amelia tore it in half.
On the final day, the prosecution played Elise’s garage video. Her image appeared above the jury, alive in blue light, speaking about dignity and choice.
Damian stared down at the table.
Amelia watched her mother.
For years, the trial had seemed destined to decide whether Damian controlled her past.
