The Marriage He Manufactured

Chapter 04 - The Marriage He Manufactured

Amelia spent her second night in the hospital reconstructing the beginning.

Damian had not appeared dangerous when they met. He was thirty-two, brilliant, funny, and impatient with rules in a way that seemed romantic. Amelia had been leading a small engineering team inside Rowe Capital, determined to succeed without using her father’s name. Damian treated her ideas seriously before anyone else did. He remembered obscure details. He sent coffee during late-night design sessions. When her mother died, he sat beside her through the entire funeral without speaking.

Only years later did Amelia recognize how carefully he had studied her grief.

He proposed six months after the burial. Victor asked them to wait. Damian called that request an insult. Amelia married him in a private ceremony and began using the Vale name professionally. When Victor offered a formal marital trust agreement, Damian refused until Amelia threatened to postpone the wedding celebration. He finally signed after adding language his attorney described as routine.

The language was not routine.

It created a path for Damian to control assets if Amelia were declared medically incapable. In the years that followed, he repeatedly suggested she was unstable: exhausted, anxious, forgetful. He encouraged her to see a doctor chosen by Vale Meridian. He kept records of every prescription. He photographed wineglasses at dinners. He told friends she had inherited her mother’s “fragile temperament.”

The pattern had been building toward a single document.

Simone Grant placed a copy on Amelia’s hospital table. It was a petition Damian’s attorneys had prepared but not yet filed, asking a court to appoint him temporary guardian over Amelia’s financial decisions. Attached was a medical statement signed by Dr. Peter Hall, the consultant who had tried to access her hospital file.

“He planned to have you declared incompetent,” Simone said. “The assault was meant to create a crisis. If you woke confused or heavily medicated, they would claim it proved their case.”

Amelia felt cold despite the blankets.

Victor stood at the window, guilt bending his shoulders. “I introduced Hall to them.”

“You introduced him as a neurologist for Mom,” Amelia said. “Damian turned him into something else.”

Detective Ortiz entered carrying an evidence bag containing Damian’s seized phone. The device was encrypted, but one notification had appeared before it was secured. It came from an unknown number.

YOU PROMISED SHE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TESTIFY.

No one in the room spoke for several seconds.

The assault had already been worse than Amelia wanted to remember. Yet the message suggested Damian’s plan had not ended when he walked away.

Ortiz asked whether anyone besides Cassandra might benefit from Amelia’s silence.

Amelia thought of the forged stock transfer, the guardianship papers, and the medical robotics acquisition. Then she remembered a file Damian had forbidden her to open months earlier—Project Lark, a research program based on a design her mother created before her death.

“There is someone,” Amelia said. “But he is not trying to hide a marriage.”

She looked at her father.

“He is trying to hide what Vale Meridian was built on.”
