Within twenty-four hours, Aegis Meridian released a technical statement.
Sentinel had performed correctly.
Weather interference damaged Lantern One.
Major Knox departed the site after becoming disoriented by injury.
The drone strike came from an unidentified hostile source.
Adrian appeared beside Margaret at the memorial service. He described Connor as a hero who stayed with his aircraft after others lost discipline.
The sentence sounded respectful.
It also placed blame exactly where Adrian needed it.
Leah was placed under investigation.
Her local recorder should have cleared her, but the device reached evidence storage with its memory erased. The medal case remained in her flight bag because military police treated it as personal property rather than technical evidence.
When the case was found, Adrian called it proof that Leah had taken advantage of confusion at the crash site.
Margaret believed him.
Her grief required structure.
Connor was the hero.
Leah was the survivor who could not explain herself.
Adrian was the remaining son helping the family understand.
General Evelyn Knox requested a classified review. Within days, she was removed from operational oversight because of her relationship to Leah. A national-security order prohibited her from discussing Sentinel outside the closed investigation.
She protested.
The Secretary of Defense warned that public disclosure could expose active navigation systems and endanger current missions.
Evelyn obeyed the silence but refused to close the case.
Leah expected her mother to defend her publicly.
Evelyn did not.
Their relationship fractured.
“You taught me truth mattered more than rank,” Leah said during their only private meeting.
“It does.”
“Then why am I standing alone?”
“Because the evidence will be destroyed if I break the order before we know where it is.”
Leah heard strategy.
She needed a mother.
The Air Force review concluded that she violated rescue protocol but lacked enough evidence for criminal charges. Her flight status was suspended. The Distinguished Flying Cross she had earned on an earlier mission was placed under review.
Adrian’s company received an expanded Sentinel contract.
Margaret introduced legislation honoring Connor’s sacrifice.
The public story hardened.
Only three surviving crew members knew Connor ordered the evacuation. Two remained hospitalized. The third disappeared after signing a contractor security agreement.
