Chapter 06 - The General and the Senator
Evelyn and Margaret had shared a face since birth.
They did not share a way of surviving pain.
Evelyn moved toward difficult facts. Margaret built meaning around them.
After Connor died, Margaret created a national scholarship, a veterans’ foundation and a yearly memorial flight. Each project protected the image of her son as a commander who remained behind while another officer fled.
Accepting Leah’s account would not diminish Connor’s courage.
Margaret feared it would dismantle the version of grief she had already given the country.
Evelyn tried to warn her privately.
“Adrian’s company altered the logs.”
Margaret heard accusation against her living son.
“You are protecting Leah.”
“I am investigating a weapons system.”
“You cannot separate those things.”
Neither sister spoke honestly about the deeper wound.
Margaret believed Evelyn had always judged her civilian life as lesser service.
Evelyn believed Margaret used public compassion to avoid private evidence.
Adrian exploited both beliefs.
He told Margaret that Evelyn wanted to destroy the Hale name to save her daughter. He told Evelyn that Margaret would never cooperate with an investigation threatening her political career.
The twins stopped trusting each other.
When Evelyn entered the courtroom in uniform, Margaret initially saw the act as intimidation.
Then Evelyn placed Connor’s complete recording beside the medals.
“Before you listen,” she said, “I need you to understand that I failed Leah too.”
Margaret looked at her sister.
Evelyn admitted she remained silent longer than the evidence required because she feared declassification would expose vulnerable operations and end her career.
“I called it protecting the mission.”
Leah watched from the witness table.
“It also protected Adrian.”
The admission mattered.
Evelyn would not repair one false hero story by creating another around herself.
Judge Emerson ordered the recording played.
Connor’s voice filled the courtroom.
“Falcon Three, evacuate surviving crew. That is a direct order.”
Leah’s voice answered, “I am coming back for you.”
“No. Carry the recorder. Tell them Sentinel changed our beacon.”
Then Connor spoke the sentence Adrian had removed.
“If I do not survive, investigate Aegis Meridian access key Hale-Seven. My brother authorized it.”

The surviving son no longer looked smug.
